We made a film with MHA Volunteers, sharing reflections on learning together and going forward as dementia champions.

 What is dementia?

  • Dementia is when I can’t remember people, I go blank.
  • I hide it from people.
  • For me it means loss of independence.
  • Getting people mixed up.
  • Forgetfulness.
  • Memory clinic.
  • It means having to have a lot of patience.

What does life with dementia feel like?

  • There’s a lot of frustration, with myself.
  • I can feel bad tempered, irritable.
  • It’s about loss, it can affect your memory.
  • It can be really embarrassing.
  • It all depends on the person.
  • Family is very important.

What do you want people to know about dementia?

  • For me its about determination.
  • Listening to others and taking advice is important.
  • You notice when someone has a lovely smile.
  • I’m stubborn, dementia won’t beat me.
  • It’s about taking charge.
  • reassurance and patience is needed.
  • Respect, empathy and caring, teamwork.

What advice do you have for people?

  • A sense of humour helps.
  • Take your time, sometimes stop and come back to it.
  • be determined, set targets to do more.
  • keep trying even when it’s hard.
  • Being able to ask for help is important.
  • Accepting help when it is offered.
  • Being firm and clear, making decisions matters.
  • Independence , I want to do things for myself.

What helps and what works?

  • People and clubs,company, storytelling.
  • keeping our brain active, wordsearches…
  • sheltered accomodation, with my own room, shared lounge, rules and meals.
  • keeping fit and healthy, variety stops it getting boring.
  • going out and about, meals, museums and shopping.
  • Going outdoors, plants and gardening.
  • art, making art in our own style.
